Can You Get Drunk from Rum Cake?

A nice old-fashioned piece of rum cake gives me a rush unlike any other kind of cake.

These treats, which include alcohol or alcohol extract, have the potential to give you a buzz, at least according to the law. Therefore, regardless of how delicious they are, you should only have them in moderation and refrain from driving for at least a few hours after eating them.

Rum cake may refer to any kind of cake that contains rum. They have an unusually high level of popularity in the Caribbean, particularly in the weeks leading up to the winter holidays. A customer from South Africa made a request for a Christmas fruit cake from me the year before Christmas. However, instead of brandy, he wanted rum to be used in the cake.

That was the very first time I had ever attempted to make a rum cake, and ever since then, I’ve been completely won over.

Let’s get right down to it!

How Much Rum is in a Rum Cake?

The answer to this question will differ for each person since it is contingent on the size of the cake as well as the recipe that is used. One of my go-to recipes for Jamaican rum cake asks for a half cup of the spirit to be included into the cake’s batter, with an additional quarter cup going into the sauce.

When I was making my Christmas fruit cakes for the order, I soaked my raisins in a cup of rum overnight. In the morning, they were plump and flavorful. After the rum had been entirely absorbed, I baked with all of the raisins that had been soaked in rum.

In addition to that, I had to add a few teaspoons of more rum to my cake every few days in the week leading up to Christmas in order to “feed” it more rum during the course of the month.

When the temperature of the batter reaches the boiling point, the alcohol contained in the cake will, of course, boil out during the baking process. However, not all of the alcohol will be removed. In addition to the sauce, the icing, and the cake soak, you’ll also find alcohol.

How Much Rum Gets You Drunk?

Now, this is something that relies on how tolerant you are.

In point of fact, this is just one of the many aspects that go into calculating how much rum it takes to make someone intoxicated. Other aspects include their age, weight, metabolism, and the foods and drinks they consume at the same time they are drinking rum.

The alcohol by volume content of rum clocks in at 40%. You may determine for yourself how much alcohol it will take for you to get intoxicated by using the charts that have been provided by Healthline, which are included below.

In light of the above, if your blood alcohol concentration is 0.08% or more, you are regarded to be legally impaired while driving. It takes around three drinks an hour for the typical woman to achieve a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08%, while it takes about four drinks an hour for the average male to reach that level.

Can You Get Drunk off Rum Cake?

Even though it is quite improbable, it is conceivable to get anything like a buzz after eating an excessive amount of rum cake.

As I’ve indicated previously, the majority of the alcohol that you’ve added to the cake mix will be lost when the cake is baked in the oven. If you just consume the sauce and whatever alcohol is left over, it is quite unlikely that you would achieve an intoxication threshold that we would typically refer to as being drunk.

If you have consumed so much rum cake that your blood alcohol concentration is more than 0.08%, you are in violation of the law if you go behind the wheel of a vehicle.

In this section, I will respond to some questions that are often asked concerning the subject.

Can rum cake make you fail a drug test?

Consuming alcoholic sweets before a drug test is a certain way to get a positive result for alcohol.

Can you get drunk off alcoholic desserts?

As I was saying, the response. I mention this because everyone’s idea of what constitutes drunkenness is a little bit different. It’s possible that after eating certain alcoholic desserts, you won’t feel the effects of the alcohol, but it’s still possible to detect the alcohol in your body via your blood, urine, breath, and other bodily fluids.

Does alcohol burn off in rum cake?

During the baking process in the oven, some of the alcohol that is included in rum cakes will evaporate, but not all of it. You also need to bear in mind that after baking, a lot of different kinds of rum cakes are doused with rum.

What is the shelf life of rum cake?

Your rum cake’s shelf life may be greatly extended as a result of the amount of alcohol and sugar it contains. Tortuga rum cakes purchased from a store and stored in airtight containers are at their peak flavor if eaten within one year of purchase. The length of time will increase if the food is refrigerated or frozen. When stored in the freezer, homemade rum cake has a shelf life of up to three months.

How long does alcohol stay in your system?

There are a few different standards that are used to quantify alcohol. Alcohol may be detectable in the blood for up to 12 hours after it has been consumed, as stated by the Cleveland Clinic. It may be detectable in breath for up to a day, and in urine for up to five days.

How much rum cake does it take to get drunk?

It takes eating two or three pieces of dry rum cake before you’ll feel the effects of the alcohol in an ordinary rum cake, which contains around a half cup of rum in the batter before it’s baked. However, if you let the cake cool completely after baking, then soak it in rum, and then serve it after it has been refrigerated, eating too much cake may cause you to feel a bit tipsy.

Does the alcohol cook out of a rum cake?

Does Rum Cake Include Alcohol in Its Ingredients? Although there is rum in both the cake and the sauce, a significant amount of it gets evaporated during the processes of baking and cooking. In spite of this, the common belief that “all” of the alcohol evaporates during the baking process is not entirely accurate.

Can alcoholic desserts get you drunk?

It’s time to toss out the outdated notion that you can consume foods that contain alcohol and ignore any of their effects on your blood alcohol levels. Sure, you’re not going to get smashed by nibbling on a small slice of tiramisu, but you also shouldn’t believe the myth that you can eat foods with alcohol and ignore any of their effects on your blood alcohol levels. It turns out that a lot of well-known dishes that are prepared with wine or liquor still have alcohol in them.

Final Thoughts

There is a proverb in Japanese that goes, “Otona no amasa,” which may be translated rather simply as “Grown-up Sweetness.” Rum cakes are an excellent illustration of this principle. It is great to be responsible, and it is nice to be able to appreciate the sweetness of being an adult. Both of these things are lovely.

Even while it is doubtful that eating a piece of rum cake would cause you to get intoxicated, you should still remember to eat in moderation, particularly if you intend on driving, in order to prevent even the tiniest possibility of driving under the influence of alcohol.
