1. Matzah bread (unleavened bread)

The yeast in most bread causes it to rise in the oven. This bread is referred to as leavened bread. So, what do you name bread that doesn’t include yeast? Of course, unleavened bread! And, as far as I know, it is the only recipe that uses simply flour and water.

Preparing Matzah bread (unleavened bread) is a breeze, which isn’t really surprising, is it? This is how you do it.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: In a mixing basin, combine 2 cups of flour.

Step 3: While mixing, slowly add 1 cup of water into the bowl.

Step 4: Knead the ingredients until it is smooth and elastic.

Step 5: Divide the dough into smaller balls and flatten them using your hands or a rolling pin.

Step 6: Prick each side of the dough with a toothpick or fork and put on a baking sheet.

Step 7: Place in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes. As your bread starts to brown and crisp, it’s time to remove it from the oven. Let to cool before slicing and serving.

2. Flatbread

Flatbread is like a blank canvas that can be transformed into anything your heart wishes. Will it be used to fill roll-ups with cheese, meat, and veggies? Will it become a dessert with apples, peanut butter, and chocolate chips? How about some pizza?

The options are practically limitless, which is why this dish is so popular. You can create excellent flatbread with only a little salt on hand.

Step 1: In a mixing dish, combine 1 cup of flour and 1 teaspoon salt.

Step 2: While mixing, slowly add a cup of water until all of it is combined.

Step 3: Knead the ingredients until smooth, then return the dough ball to the mixing basin and set aside for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Split the dough into six pieces and flatten using your hands or a rolling pin.

Step 5: Heat a skillet over high heat on the stove.

Step 6: When the pan is hot, place a thin slice of flatbread dough on it and cook for 30 seconds before flipping. Continue with the rest of the dough. Keep it cool and creative!

3. Traditional Bread

The two bread alternatives listed above may be too flat for your requirements. I can’t fathom attempting to build a mile-high turkey bacon avocado sandwich out of Matzah. Is it conceivable? Sure. Will it turn out well? Eh.

That is why I chose to include this classic bread recipe on the list, or as some may call it, quarantine bread, since who hasn’t tried to bake bread like this while they were pent up at home with nothing to eat?

Although this recipe contains salt and active dry yeast, the stars of the show are water and wheat. So it’s still bread if it’s simply flour and water, right? (Not precisely, but don’t blow my bubble).

The good news is that active dry yeast and salt are really cheap, so you won’t have to break the bank to get these ingredients.

Step 1: In a mixing dish, combine 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of salt.

If the recipe is too moist, add a bit extra flour, but not too much.

Step 2: Cover the bowl with a cover or plastic wrap and let it aside at room temperature for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours.

Step 3: Knead the bread with floured hands on a floured surface. The dough will be somewhat moist and difficult to deal with.

Step 4: Put the formed dough in a loaf pan that has been oiled.

Step 5: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Let your dough to rest while it heats up.

Step 6: Cut a cross-slice over the top of your bread dough (not too deep).

Step 7: Bake for about 50 minutes. Let it cool for 20 minutes before slicing (if desired).
