I don’t know about you, but I enjoy my cookies crispy on the exterior and chewy and moist on the inside. A excellent cookie, in my opinion, must have a decent texture balance.
Because life isn’t flawless, not every batch of cookies you make will be perfect. (Too dramatic?) But, truly, everyone has been disappointed by cookies that are overly hard. Is there a way to fix this?
Fortunately, there is. My name is Angie. I’m a self-taught baker with over ten years of experience. I make cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and other delectable treats. In this essay, I’ll reveal my tricks for softening hard cookies so that you may save your own.

Method 1: Heat’em Up!
Cookies are very heavy in fat, despite our best efforts to deny it. Butter is a common component in most cookie recipes. It is responsible for the excellent texture and taste of cookies.
The issue with butter is that it solidifies at room temperature. When heated, the butter melts and rapidly fills all the gaps in the cookie, moistening and softening it.
The same is true with chocolate. If it’s a chocolate chip cookie, the chocolate softens and melts in your tongue when cooked. This will not only make your cookie taste better, but it will also make it less dry and crumbly in your mouth.
You must not just rebake your cookies in order to do this. For soft chewy cookies, set them in a preheated oven for a few minutes to warm them up, but not for the whole baking time, otherwise they will stiffen up even more and all of your hard work will go for nothing.
Cookies may also be microwaved. You may do this in the microwave with a wet paper towel since the steam from the paper towel will moisten and soften the biscuit. However, the exterior shell of the cookie may get mushy as well, which we do not want.
The story’s moral When employing this approach, heat your cookie for the shortest period of time possible to prevent additional overcooking and an even drier texture.
Method 2: Wrap Them
The cookie’s middle is still tender to the touch. When fresh from the oven, cookies should virtually never be completely firm.In general, we know cookies are done when the outer edge becomes golden and the inside ring turns golden.
So what happens when you discover them precisely that way?
There is just one method to correct the error. You may individually wrap your cookies in cling wrap or tin foil, or in an airtight container with anything that can limit airflow and slow down oxygen reaching your cookie.
When your cookies are still somewhat warm from baking, but not so hot that they burn your palm, you should do this. This technique softens cookies by trapping steam within the cookie and the container.
Of course, too much of anything is never good. We don’t want oversteamed, mushy cookies.
Method 3: Pop’in a Slice of Bread
This procedure works like a charm. I certainly like to save the finest for last! This approach is fantastic since it just need a jar and a piece of white bread.
Sneak in your white bread and your cookies will never know. If you leave the jar closed for more than 24 hours, your cookies will have miraculously softened.
The miracle is that your cookies will begin to feed off the moisture from the bread without even realizing it. If a bad analogy helps you comprehend, think of a parasite.
Instead, your bread will have dried out by the conclusion of this procedure. (Imagine a body that has had all the water squeezed out of it.) You’ll be left with a stale slice of crouton-like bread that lacks crunch.
Again, I recommend using just plain white bread for this reason to reduce the scents that may be absorbed into and mixed with your cookies.
FAQs
The following are some frequently asked questions regarding softening hard cookies. I’ve responded to them below.
There is a lot of butter in cookie dough. Because the butter is exposed to heat throughout the baking process, it will melt into a liquid. When chilled, butter hardens again, which is why cookies seem firm.
Gluten generated during the mixing step is another cause of cookie stiffening after baking. Overmixing your dough might quickly result in hard cookies.
There are several methods to repurpose old hard cookies. Make pie crust, crumble it up, and use it as a topping on other dishes like ice cream or in a trifle.
In general, soft cookies become hard owing to baking at higher than required temperatures or for too long. For the greatest results, cookies, particularly soft cookies, should be slightly underbaked. Keep in mind that the baking pan is hot, and the cookies will continue to cook for a few minutes after being removed.
As previously said, the key to soft cookies is to remove them just before they are entirely done and allow them to continue baking on the baking pan to avoid overbaking.

FAQs
Wrap the hardened cookie in a moist paper towel and microwave for 10-15 seconds. The heated moisture from the paper towel, along with the heat from the microwave, will assist in softening the cookie. Just make sure the paper towel is moist rather than dripping wet.
What’s the catch? Place your slice of bread on top of the cookie stack in a container, shut the lid, and leave overnight. In the morning, you’ll be greeted with soft-as-if-just-baked cookies that have absorbed all of the moisture from the bread to become chewy once again.
We have an easy solution to salvage your moderately burned cookies. You just need a grater and a cookie. Gently shred the burned edges and side of the cookie until the black particles are no longer visible. It is best to use a little hand grater that is simple to use.
Why Do Cookies Harden? Cookies, like other baked goods, are prone to becoming stale. The moisture in the cookies evaporates over time, making them hard and crumbly. It occurs to breads, muffins, and other baked foods in the same way.
The most frequent cause of difficult cookies is because the cookie batter was over-mixed. Gluten starts to develop when flour is added to the dough. Gluten helps to bind baked foods, but too much gluten might result in tough cookies.
A cookie contains milk solids and water, both of which soften it. Brown sugar contains molasses, which acts as a softener. Using lower-moisture sugar (granulated) and fat (vegetable shortening), together with a longer, slower bake, results in light, crispy cookies.
Put the limp cookies or less-than-crispy crackers back into a preheated 300° F or 325° F oven, regardless of the initial (probably higher) baking temperature.
Simply lay the stale cookie on a paper towel in the microwave beside a small glass of water. Heat for 30 seconds, check for softness, then repeat for additional 10 or 20 seconds if necessary. Voila!
Aside from the fragrance, if the cookies seem unusually hard, they are most certainly stale. Such cookies will never be eaten. Another method to identify faulty cookies is by their texture. If the cookie seems dry and very hard, it is most certainly stale.
What can you make out of overdone cookies? Overcooked cookies may be used to produce a crumble topping, a pie crust, or even ice cream sandwiches. However, you can just scrape away the charred parts and consume them!
