Cupcakes are a pretty simple delicacy to make. But, as simple as they are, they still require time due to the number of stages involved, which is why most of us prefer to bake them ahead of time.
With hundreds of cupcakes on hand that won’t be required until the following day, you’re wondering, “Um, what now?”
Putting them in the fridge is certainly a possibility. Is it, however, the best? No, not always.
I’m Angie, and I’ve been making cupcakes for over ten years. Last year, I got the chance to establish my own cupcake company. With all of that expertise, I can confidently claim that I know a thing or two about cupcake storage.
In this post, I’ll discuss why and when you should refrigerate cupcakes, as well as how and for how long.
Let’s begin baking!

Should you refrigerate cupcakes overnight?
No, wait, I mean yeah! but no, no?
The answer largely relies on your other storage choices, the kind of cupcakes you’re talking about, and whether or not they’re frosted.
Theoretically, any kind of cupcake may be refrigerated overnight. Yet, your cupcakes are prone to drying out since the refrigerator’s chilling function eliminates any moisture or water vapor. That said, there is a tremendous difference between the two.
If you have the opportunity, freeze your cupcakes instead of refrigerating them. Freezing your cupcakes will keep them moist; you can even store them in the freezer for up to three months.
If you’re using typical American buttercream frosting, there’s no need to chill it unless you live in a really hot climate and your butter melts. Buttercream-frosted cupcakes may be stored at room temperature for up to two days. Refrigeration is required if you are using frosting that contains dairy or eggs.
Frosted cupcakes dry out more slowly than unfrosted cupcakes because the frosting serves as a barrier between the top of the cake and the chilly air.
How to refrigerate cupcakes?
To refrigerate cupcakes, ensure sure they have cooled to room temperature. Newly made cupcakes should not be placed in the refrigerator right away since they might heat up other items and cause spoiling. Because of the fast cooling, your cupcakes may shrink too soon and detach from the cupcake liners.
You’ll need a container to store your frozen cupcakes, whether they’re frosted or unfrosted. An airtight container might help to keep your cakes wet and prevent them from drying out. You can also keep your cakes from smelling like other foods in your refrigerator.
Choose a container that is large and deep enough to house your cupcakes without smushing the cake. Provide enough room for each cupcake so they don’t squash into one another, and you’ll have an easier time removing them.
If you don’t have a container, wrap your cupcakes with plastic wrap instead. Again, use a deep enough trap and prevent contact between the cupcakes and the plastic wrap.
How long can you keep cupcakes refrigerated?
In general, you may store your cupcakes in the refrigerator for up to four days. If your cupcakes include fresh ingredients, such as fruit or cheese, they should be consumed within two days.
Final Words
I’m not sure about you, but everytime I prepare cupcakes, they disappear within a day before I have a chance to consume one. While storing cupcakes in the refrigerator is safe and popular, I do not advocate it. If you must keep your cupcakes, I propose freezing them instead.
I hope you discovered what you were searching for! If you have any other queries about refrigerating cupcakes, please leave a comment and let me know. I will respond as soon as possible!
