What exactly is Cake? What exactly is pastry? What is the distinction? Here are some long-standing issues in the baking business, whether you’re a baker or a customer. You’d think that as a baker, I’d know better than anybody, but even I had to do some research.

When you break down the issue, it becomes pretty simple, just like anything else. Ingredients, appearance, and occasions are the three fundamental distinctions between cake and pastry.

Another distinguishing feature of cake is its moisture. Nobody like dry cake, although dry pastries are rather frequent. There is a difference in the components that contribute to the moisture levels in these two kinds of baked foods.

Cakes often have a larger ratio of liquid components than pastries. Sugar, on the other hand, may not have occurred to you as a critical issue.

When sugar is heated, it melts and is therefore classified as a liquid component. Since that most cakes are more sweeter than most pastries, you may realize how much it helps to moisten cake.

Cake and pastry both rise, however chemical leaveners like baking powder and baking soda are often added to raise the volume of cake, while most pastries rise from yeast and the steam formed when butter melts in the oven.

If you’re anything like me, you probably prefer to pick up some pastries on your way home or to work as a fast and soothing treat to nibble on or enjoy with your coffee. It doesn’t matter whether your pastry is sloppy or sticky; they’re supposed to be that way.

Cakes are a whole other story. Sure, you can get a casually sliced piece of cake at your local café. But certainly you anticipate a beautifully adorned cake with a sweet message on top for your special occasion?

Cakes are often associated with festivities. You name it: weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations. Cakes are meant to be shared and enjoyed with family and friends. The larger and more daring, the better!
